Plan for Application
The Speaking and Listening Standards address student discourse or “student talk” in ways that our previous standards did not. Additionally, student talk and engagement is emphasized in several areas of our state’s new teacher evaluation system (TPEP). Thus we decided to focus this week’s application on the nine strategies for improving student talk discussed in this chapter. Of the nine strategies for improving student talk listed on pp. 29-31, identify two (2) that you can implement over the next two weeks that you think would likely most improve the discourse in your classroom.
Tell Us Your Plan (Post by end of Week 1)
Which two strategies are you selecting and why? Please provide the relevant context (grade level, course, content, resources) for your planned application.
Apply
Put your plan into action in your classroom.
Reflect (Post by end of Week 2 by replying to your own Plan Post)
How did it go? Reflecting on the two strategies you implemented, what successes, challenges, and/or insights did you and your students encounter? What will be your next steps for improving student-to-student discourse in your classroom? How do you see improved student discourse helping your students meet the CCSS?
Interact
Over the course of the two weeks, don’t forget to respond to another participant’s plan or reflection.
